Is Smithers Gay?
Ahh...The eternal question asked by every Simpsons fanatic, is Smithers actually gay? Well, here's the evidence for and against. If you can think of any more evidence, (for or against), or if you have any comments, use the form at the bottom of this page.
The Case For
- Smithers often has fantasies about Mr Burns
- Smithers often sees Mr Burns naked (Brush With Greatness, Who Shot Mr Burns Part II)
- When Smithers goes on holiday, he is seen at an all-male disco (Homer The Smithers)
- Smithers wears an Hawaiian shirt - a sure gay giveaway (Homer The Smithers)
- Smithers' computer screen saver shows pictures of Mr Burns naked
- There is an obvious tension between gay guy John and Smithers (Homer's Phobia)
- As Springfield is about to be crushed by Bart's Comet, Smithers kisses Mr Burns (Bart's Comet)
- When the inhabitants of Springfield believe the apocalypse is nigh, Smithers tells Mr Burns he loves him (Lisa The Sceptic)
- Smithers owns the world's largest collection of Malibu Stacey. (Lisa Vs Malibu Stacey)
- Smithers has been seen wearing a pink robe and ironing - What male irons? (The Trouble With Trillions)
- Smithers fantasises about a naked Mr Burns coming out of his birthday cake, singing "Happy Birthday" a la Marilyn Monroe. (Rosebud)
- When Mr Burns tells Smithers to take a holiday, Smithers replies "No! Don't make me take a vacation! Without you I'll writher and die!" (Homer The Smithers)
- Smithers dresses up in a cuddly bear suit for Mr Burns. (Rosebud)
- Smithers has written and starred in his own Malibu Stacey play.
- Smithers tells burns that he has "an enchanting musk" (The Old Man And The Lisa)
- Smithers draws a picture of Mr Burns naked, a la Titanic (The Old Man And The C Student)
- Smithers was in the navy.
- How 'bout this piece of dialogue:
Burns: You see me as a God, right Smithers?
Smithers: Absolutely Sir
Burns: You'd kneel before me?
Smithers: Boy, would I!? (The Joy Of Sect) - Or this one:
Burns: Take off my belt
Smithers: With pleasure Sir! (Burns, Baby Burns)
The Case Against
- No 'hard' evidence (no pun intended)
- We have never seen Smithers in bed with anyone
- Smithers sees Burns naked, so what? Who here can say they've never seen one of their friends naked?
- Smithers sometimes dreams about Burns? Come on, we've all had homosexual thoughts...I know you have
- Tension between John and Smithers? Maybe Smithers doesn't like gays!
- Smithers wears an Hawaiian shirt? He might just have a crap fashion sense
- Smithers' computer? Come on, who hasn't got porn on their computer?
- The kiss? May have been a mark of respect, a heat of the moment thing, maybe he thought Burns was someone else
- The "I love you"? He may have meant it as a friend, not all love is sexual, is it?
- The Malibu Stacey collection? C'mon, everybody collects something don't they? At least he doesn't collect stamps!
- The Malibu Stacey play was just Smithers showing us how creative he is. Writing plays is a very worth-while pastime.
- The naked picture? Marge has drawn Burns naked before and no-one's ever called her gay!
- Burns' "enchanting musk"? Let's face it, old people do stink, don't they?
Comments
Regarding wether Smithers is gay In the episode with the Malibu Stacy musical, Burns comments that Smithers doesn't know the meaning of the word "gay". That would not be a joke if Smithers was not a homosexual. In the episode where Bart gets a job in a burlesque house, it turns out that Smithers has been there and he excuses himself to Mr. Burns by saying that his family (Smithers') insisted that he go there. Why would they insist on that unless Smithers showed signs of being gay? In the episode where Sideshow Bob wins the election and becomes mayor of Springfield, Smithers helps Bart and Lisa to stop Bob because he (Smithers) has a lifestyle that the conservatives doesn't like. In the US homosexuality is often referred to as a lifestyle decision. All this off the top off my head. Maybe I should cut down on my Simpsons intake. :-) Yours truly Peter

Smithers is Gay: One you've missed: when Homer is barred from Moe's ("Fear of Flying") his favourite record,"It's Raining Men", is ritualistically removed from the jukebox and flung out of the window. Smithers happens to be driving past; he catches it, reads the label, and says "Mmm!" or something. Antilli

I watch The Simpsons sometimes (not too often) and Smithers is always hinting towards Mr Burns that he totally wants him. Like, when Mr Burns fell in love with Marge's mother, Smithers had to pick them up from the old peoples dance club and when they got in the car Smithers had that "I'm sooooooooooo jealous" look on his face. And, in the same episode Smithers told Mr Burns a great love poem to write to her, and when Mr Burns asked where did he get it, he told him it was in the birthday card he gave him last year, then he started to cry! So obviously he is gay!!! Anywayz I just thought I'd have my say so bye. Mich

When Mr Burns goes out with Marge's mother and Mr Burns takes her home, Smithers frowns when she hops in the car
Dean Family
In the recent episode Hunka Hunka Burns In Love, there is a certain section of dialogue that I think proves Smithers' gayness. Mr Burns:(Reading out fortune cookie) You will find true love on flag day. Smithers:Well, it's just you and me here sir. I think this proves that Smithers' is really gay. Whether or not Mr Burns is, is another story.

Smithers remembers a fantasy of Mr. Burns flying through the window as Mr. Burns talks about the same fantasy towards Marge

Waylon's condition could be explained by burns telling him at an early age that instead of his (Smithers') father being killed in a plant accident, he was killed by a group of amazons. Burns even apologized and said "I don't know if it has had any lasting effects." Smithers has a lamenting look on his face and replies "I guess we will never know." Bottom line is Waylon Smithers is probably gay or at least thinks about it a whole lot.
Ian, dethknight85@aol.com
Smithers is OBVIOUSLY gay. Only a fool would argue otherwise. In addition to the points mentioned above: 1. When Smithers takes a vacation, we see him in a crowded bar with NO WOMEN. There is a conga line in the bar. 'Nuff said. 2. We also witnessed the awkward moment between Smithers and the Simpson's out-of-the-closet friend, John. "John! So this is your sick mother" "Don't do this to me Waylon." Please. He's gay. End of discussion. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Zackeeus, zackrodman@hotmail.com
In one episode, Mr. Burns said to Smithers: "What did you do this weekend Smithers? Something gay no doubt" Smithers: "Huh?" Mr. B: "Oh, you know Mothers, lock up your daughters, Smithers is on the town!"
Matthew, matty_man1@hotmail.com
I think he is gay
Drilon, me4speed@hotmail.com
There was an episode where it showed Smithers was married. But they split over Mr Burns

In the recent episode where Homer writes fortune cookies, Burns gets a fortune saying "You will find true love on flag day", Smithers responds: "Well it is just you and I here sir"

Of course he is gay. I'm gay, so I know. But the awful truth is he's not in love with Mr Burns. He just wants his money.
Alfonso, neogladiador@hotmail.com
Could it be that the creators of the show wanted another unanswered question (for instance the Simpsons state)? Probably. So they decided to make a character with strong gay tendencies, but not tell you he's gay so that you will watch and wonder every week. So really maybe there is no answer, but I'm sure you'll watch it every week to find out more clues. Its strategic writing. And darn good writing at that.

I am horribly addicted to the Simpsons, and I have, as my parents tell me, an unhealthy addiction to the show. It is apparent that Mr. Smithers is gay. In the episode in which Mr. Burns wants his bear Bobo, Smithers dresses as the bear telling Mr. Burns to hug him and squeeze him. He lives to gain the love of Mr. Burns. He has fantasies about Mr Burns almost constantly. He obviously used to have a gay relationship with John our flamboyantly gay friend. He dislikes Mr. Burns' relationships with women. Smithers collects girls dolls. He has porn of Mr Burns on his fricken computer! The simple truth of the matter is that Smithers is gay. The evidence may be circumstantial but there is enough of it to send a person to prison! So my fellow fans I believe we should just leave the poor "queer" alone to pursue his relationship with his employer. Let us find another controversy to spend our time debating! p.s. Duffman=God. Another piece of evidence is that during the Springfield gay parade one Mr. Smithers arm is seen on a float saying: "Staying in the closet". His voice was also heard.
Michael Bround, dumname@hotmail.com
In one of the referenced episodes (regarding the apocalypse) Smithers says something like "Oh, what the hell" and plants a big kiss on Burns. Case closed.
The Hairp, ktcall@yahoo.com
In one of the episodes that features a gay parade going by the front of the Simpson's house (I think it's been in the past couple of years. Fairly recent), there is a float for gays in the closet, with a little room and two hands waving to the crowd from behind the door and two voices chanting "we're here we're queer" from behind the door. One voice was Smithers' the other was Patty (I know it was Patty because Selma was the one who had been married before). I think the real debate should be is Patty gay? Come on Smithers definitely is, all signs point to Patty too, but that one's a little less obvious.
Rain King, rain_king@sprynet.com
Smithers is obviously gay. There's no doubt about it. There was one episode where Mr Burns was commenting on dogs or something like that, and said, "How would you like it if I came and started slobbering all over you and sniffing your crotch?" and Smithers replies with, "If YOU did it, Sir?" Plus all of the other evidence. He's so gay.
Lizzie, tin_lizzie789@hotmail.com
When the plant is about to have a meltdown, Mr Burns says "Its about time we kissed our sorry asses goodbye", and Smithers says "May i Sir?". Burns "Oh hot dog thanks for making my last few moments on earth socially awkward"
Luke Crosby, duffman01lc@hotmail.com
In the episode on flag day when Mr Burns is looking for his true love they go into a "nude women's fire station," as Mr Burns calls it. Smithers is in a corner with 2 girls shaking suggestively in front of him, he is covering his eyes and yelling "No, no, no!!"
EB, eb13108@sbcglobal.net
In the episode where Lisa creates Lisa Lionheart, she visits Smithers at his house and she looks at his PC. Smithers has that screen saver of Mr Burns saying: "Hello Smithers, you are good at turning me on", Smithers: "Maybe you should pretend you didn't see that"
Luke Crosby, duffman01lc@hotmail.com
Smithers is gay because when Mr Burns fell in love with Marge and asked Smithers if he had ever had that dream where they fly in through the window, and Smithers said yes and then it has flashbacks to Smithers' dream and its Mr Burns flying in through the window.
Tom, tdorr55@hotmail.com
Smithers isn't necessarily gay! In one clip (I can't remember which), Smithers has a girl friend for some reason Smithers has a crutch to support his leg and his girlfriend slags off Mr Burns and Smithers says: "You leave Mr burns out of this" and he smashes some bottles. Now that I think about it, I think it was the Who Shot Mr Burns episode
Luke Crosby, duffman01lc@hotmail.com
Hey, I would like to recall one of the newer Simpson episodes where Homer has a nervous breakdown. In this episode Burns tells Smithers how his dad really died. He was killed in the Power Plant reactor, whereas Smithers had been told that his father was killed by savage women in the amazon. Could this have warped him to a phobia of women? Think about that!!!!
Pollo, homer_doh87@hotmail.com
In one of the newer episodes where we find out how Smithers' dad died. Mr burns reveals that he told Smithers that his father was murdered by a group of Amazonian women. He then says I hope this didn't warp your mind in any way, & Smithers says we'll never know. But he looks really shifty while he says it. So he may just fear women. But looking at the other stuff its obvious that this is the reason HE IS IN FACT GAY.
Adam Kirkman, kirkemfest@hotmail.com
He was dancing with the village people. FULL STOP!
Adam Kirkman, kirkemfest@hotmail.com
He knew that John (the gay bloke in the episode where homer starts to think that Bart's gay) from somewhere.
Adam Kirkman, kirkemfest@hotmail.com
Two extra pieces of evidence FOR: Smithers danced to "in the navy" with the village ppl on the submarine. When homer remembers finding a body in the quarry at the end of the episode Mr Burns tells a story of how he told young Smithers that his dad was kidnapped by women (or something like that) and that it may have changed his
life is some way. I know that doesn't make sense but watch it again and you'll see what I mean.
Craig Collins
Smithers is gay because: When Homer, Moe and Barney are at Moe's, Homer upsets the rest of the locals by going too far on a prank. Moe chucks him out and he also chucks out his record "Its raining men". As the record flys out the window, it hits Smithers and he says "Hmm Raining Men". Or something like that.
David Thorpe, blades_r_ace@hotmail.com
What I don't understand is why there's even a debate about this. Is Homer bald? Yes. Is Smithers gay? YES! It's a fact in the show, not a question.
Ham, oh_bloody_hell@hotmail.com
Ok, i would just like to say that all the points made in the case against are rebuttles of the points made in the case for. There is no evidence that he is not gay, meaning that no one has seen anything that proves he is straight, but they have seen things that prove he is gay.
Yazan
Smithers is gay because he has a little dog (I don't know his name), and only a freak would have a little dog like that. Also he lives on his own, and he also sings a camp song when he irons his shirts.....oh oh... and he wears a pink dressing gown...lol...what a loser!
Luke Crosby (a.k.a Miguel Sanchez), duffman01lc@hotmail.com
And of course, there was the episode where Smithers and Burns were discussing something about dogs... Burns: "Nonsense Smithers, dogs are idiots. How would you like it if i came up to you everyday, sticking my head in your crotch." Smithers: "If you did it, sir?" And the Tension between John and Smithers is actually Smithers commenting to John about a lie. John: "Ah to John about a lie. John: "Ah Simpsons!" Smithers: "Yes yes, I know the Simpsons." (Smithers leans over to John and whispers.) Smithers: "So this is your sick mother?" The evidence is irrefutable. Smithers is gay, and that's all there is to it.
Rob Rutter, confederatedesperado@hotmail.com
The episode where they are going to elect a new mayor, Smithers meets Lisa somewhere and says that though he supports Mr. Burns, he is not in favour of Mr. Burns running for mayor because his conservative views clash with his "choice of lifestyle," or something to that effect. This shouldn't even be a discussion, it's obvious he's gay.
check it out, itssuperobvious@hotmail.com
Smithers, I think he is bi. I think this because the damning evidence we have before us. But he doesn't like Mr Burns, but he does act gay I think he wants the money, also he's bi because he doesn't say he's gay but the damning evidence shows so we can say he's bi.
Alex Chase, ajc102889@yahoo.com
Ok, he's gay, don't even try to argue with it cuz deep down you know it's true. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Even if he isn't gay he has an odd obsession with his boss that borders on dangerous.
Steph, sbgforever@aol.com
He is so gay. He baths Mr Burns!
Meagen, bootylicious@homail.com
Have you ever seen a man who lives with another man, eats with another man, shares a house with the man and probably sleeps with who isn't flippin gay?
Sophie Bridges
In my opinion, the point is not that he's gay, the point is that he loves Mr. Burns. I mean, guessing that Smithers is more or less 35 years old, what kinda illness does he have that he has sex-meaning dreams of a 104-year-old man?
Busman
He's obviously gay. This whole page is a ridiculous waste of time. If it turns out he's NOT gay, I'll eat my hat.
Darcy McGilvery, sackerdm@yahoo.com
I don't think Smithers is straight. Also in a season 2 episode, there's a Smithers line that leads me to my opinion that you may have missed. Burns: Somebody up there likes me, Smithers. Smithers: Somebody down here likes you too sir.
Shelby McNulty
Marge draws pictures of Burns naked, and no one has called her gay because she is a girl and he is a guy.
Brittany Zane
I believe Smithers is at least bi because in the Simpsons' board game he is dressed as the maid. In a dress and all so if not bi then at least a cross-dresser that has a thing for other men.
